It is an important right that a victim must be protected. Victims need basic criminal rights such as to be present, consulted, and heard at their hearing. A criminal should also be jailed or other forms of punishment for the appropriate time. A large problem with the current criminal justice system is over crowding of jails. Many of the inn mates are drug addicts, theses people should not be jailed along with murders. Only people who harmed or could harm another human should be jailed. SIx out of every ten inmates committed nonviolent crimes related to drugs. These people who have committed drug crimes should only do community service. This would cut down on prison crowding and keep the violent criminals, such as murderers and rapists, in jail for their full sentence.
Protecting the right to self-defense is important. People owning firearms to defend themselves is the solution, not part of the problem. In Florida citizens have been able to carry firearms since 1987. The murder rate has dropped from 21% to 12%. It is also proven that self-defence is the safest reaction to a offender, (17.4 injury rate.) Waiting periods to obtain licenses should be eliminated.
Overall, we must punish criminals according to the crime that they committed. Eliminate prison crowding. Hire more police. Allow people to protect themselves with concealed firearms.
